It is being widely reported that the Pittsburgh Pirates second ranked pitching prospect, and No. 5 overall prospect, Roansy Contreras is being called up to the major leagues.  This is in response to relief pitcher, Duane Underwood Jr. suffering an injury yesterday.  Underwood was pulled in the middle of his relief appearance in the 6th inning of the Pirates opener against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Contreras should be a familiar name to Pirate fans.  He became the youngest pitcher to start a game for the Pirates in over 17 years at just 21 years-old in September of last season.  That start created a ton of buzz among Pirate fans, and his eventual call-up was greatly anticipated this season.

However, Contreras may only be coming up to fill the spot in the bullpen, which would not be quite as exciting as him starting.  It also may be the result of a mismanagement of players as Contreras was the only pitcher available to be called up on the 40-man roster.  While it is always nice to see fresh, talented blood at the major league level, I really wish Roansy was coming up under different circumstances.
