Daniel Vogelbach Has Now Proven Me Wrong...Twice

Photo courtesy of Bally Sports Wisconsin Twitter account Remember to follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram for continued Pittsburgh Sports coverage: Follow @GoldLotSports Follow Gold Lot Sports on Instagram When the Pittsburgh Pirates first signed Daniel Vogelbach , I was more excited about the guy they were getting than the player. The guy was a massive bowling ball of a power hitter with a mohawk and loved to have fun on the field with crazy outfits. Guys like that who can occasionally hit bombs are just fun to have on the team. However, the player was a career .210 hitter who really only had one productive season under his big belt. While I was happy to have a fun, and new, guy to root for, on a team I didn’t expect to have a particularly successful season, I did not expect much from Vogelbach’s play on the field. I saw him as a platoon DH who may split at-bats with Yoshi Tsutsugo and Michael Chavis . Voge...

We Have Reached the Month of McCutchen and Reynolds

Remember to follow us on Twitter and Facebook for continued Pittsburgh Sports coverage: Follow @GoldLotSports If you're reading this, you're either a Pittsburgh Pirate fan or at least aware of them. Therefore, you know just how good of an April the team had, and just how bad of a May they followed it up with. We don't need to harp on that. However, now, the Pirates go into the month of June on a 2-game winning streak. They also finished May with their only series win the entire month. And if we need even more reason to hold on to the hope, we are about to enter the month of Bryan Reynolds and Andrew McCutchen. pic.twitter.com/QnJnNm4T8n — Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) May 31, 2023 Baseball is weird. It doesn't make sense that the turn of a calendar can change how a player is playing, but it seems more than any other sport that a new month does indeed do just that. Luckily, our Pirates have two of the best June bal...

Who Would the Pittsburgh Pirates Be Tanking to Draft If They Fall Even Further

I wrote an article discussing how the Pittsburgh Pirates could end the 2021 season on a high-note by playing a part in knocking bitter rival, the Cincinnati Reds, out of the playoffs . It was generally embraced, but m any of the comments were encouraging the Pirates to lose for a better draft pick. It got me thinking, who would the Pirates be tanking for anyway? Is there that big of a difference between who the Pirates could take at No. 2 versus No. 5 in next year’s amateur draft? Let’s take a look. Current Standings If the season ended today, the Pirates would have the 4th overall pick in next year's draft. They are one game up on the Texas Rangers for the 3 rd pick overall, eight games up on the Arizona Diamondbacks for 2 nd overall, and nine games up on the Baltimore Orioles for the 1 st overall pick. Additionally, they are five games back of the Washington Nationals who currently hold the 5 th overall pick. So with 13 ga...
